Even in its 134th year, Kieler Woche still plays a virtuoso performance on the keyboard of festivity: Kieler Woche is the largest summer festival in Northern Europe. From 18 to 26 June, more than three million visitors from all over the world will be diving into the colourful and multi-facetted life of Kieler Woche.
Around 2.000 events in areas of culture, sailing, summer festival, entertainment, science, politics, industry and sport come together to form a maritime symphony. Visitors are promised nine days of high spirits in the far North.
There is music in the Kiel air
Around 300 rock and pop concerts will be held at venues all across the city. The musical route leads from the event centre at the Olympic Yacht Harbour Kiel-Schilksee through the “Gewaltig leise” open-air stage at the Krusenkoppel, the Kieler Woche music tent on the Reventlouwiese, the NDR stage at Ostseekai, the Junge Bühne (young stage) in Ratsdienergarten, the Town Hall stage and the NetUSE stage at the main railway station right up to the Hörnstage at the top of the Hörn.
International stars, local celebrities, newcomers and cult bands will get the party going on the city’s stages.
Kieler Woche for children
At the 43th Spiellinie, Europe’s largest open-air cultural event for children, tens of thousands of Kieler Woche’s smaller visitors can make a journey. Then there will be painting, hammering, playing and marvelling just opposite the Schleswig-Holstein parliament at the Krusenkoppel (children’s playground and festival area). The Spiellinie programme includes Punch and Judy shows on the Waldbühne (forest stage), participatory concerts on the open-air stage and performances of children’s singer-songwriters on the ABK stage. In the evenings, the open-air stage at Krusenkoppel draws in a grown-up crowd for the “gewaltig leise” concerts and comedy night.
Right next to the International Market, the curtains will open on the Kieler Woche Hoftheater in Hiroshima Park under the artistic leadership of the lüdemann-theater (also presented by Kieler-Woche-Förderverein). Puppet theatre performances by theatre companies from all across Germany will be watched wide-eyed by their young audiences, and there will be hand puppet theatre performances for adults, too. On other evenings, the programme will include jazz and dancing.
A culinary world tour
The 39th International Market on the Rathausplatz will be setting off on a culinary world tour: culinary delights and arts and crafts from more than 30 countries will be on offer for Kieler Woche visitors.
Kiel becomes the stage for cabaret performances of all kind: walk acts, comedians, clowns, magicians, acrobats and mime artists will have their audiences looking on in wonder and laughing until they cry. The Kieler Woche Office of the Land Capital Kiel has engaged as many as 30 individual artists or groups for about 250 appearances.
Cabaret at the Kieler Woche
There will be fun and fantasy again on the Kleinkunstbühne (cabaret stage) on the Reventlouwiese. The International Balloon Sail on the Nordmarksportfeld will provide a colourful spectacle with its magnificent hot air balloons in the Kieler Woche sky and romantic night glows on the ground.
Lighting up the sky over Kiel Fjord, the music-synchronised closing fireworks display, “Starry Magic over Kiel”, will be the crowning finale to Kieler Woche on Sunday 26 June. This is how Kieler Woche 2016 will say goodbye to its guests.
